Labrador Duck and Cattails chicago pottery Large Dutch Grown Amaryllis BulbThis mug memorializes a beautifully plumed Labrador Duck, the last time it was sighted was in 1878 in Elmira, NY. It was not a hugely hunted bird, but had a very specialized coastal diet which may have been affected by burgeoning coastal populations and cities. This piece was created from a wheel thrown body with added sculptural elements. Color is layered throughout the making process at every stage in order to achieve a lively depth in the surface.
