It is applicable to most kinds of waters having a COD value higher than 30 mg L (see also the note in clause 9). The maximum COD value that can be determined on an undiluted sample is 700 mg L. It is not applicable to highly saline waters containing (after dilution) more than 1 000 mg L of chloride, such as sea and oilfield waters.
