The most commonly used reference electrodes are Ag AgCl (for aqueous electrolytes) and Ag Ag+ (for organic solvent based electrolytes). However, for some systems, where there are no major fluctuations of ionic activity, a noble metal wire electrode (e. g. platinum or silver) may be substituted for the reference electrode. In this case, the
